Liz Owen has been
studying yoga for over 20 years and teaching since 1990. A practitioner of
classic hatha yoga, Liz is dedicated to the
beautiful and inspiring art of the Iyengar method
while also exploring the vinyasa and tantra traditions. She pioneered the practice of Yoga Lila, which explores the flow of
energy as it plays in the field of the body. Combining the physical
alignment and meditation in action principles of Iyengar
yoga with the cultivation of insight and joy of tantra,
Liz's classes create a rich practice for all students. Her goal is to awaken
each practitioner into a realization of the joyful beauty and
light that exists inside the heart of every being.
Classes
are dynamic and challenging, yet always respectful of students' individual
abilities and needs. Liz draws inspiration from the deep well of yogic
philosophy and brings mindfulness and broadness into each class experience.
Liz was on the faculty of the BKS Iyengar Yoga
Center of Greater Boston from 1990 – 2003. Currently she teaches
weekly classes in Arlington, Massachusetts at The Arlington Center for Movement,
Meditation and Wellness and at First
Parish Church
in Cambridge, Massachusetts
and is on the faculty of Wellesley
College. She teaches
workshops, clinics and private sessions throughout New
England and has a specialization in therapeutic yoga as a
healing modality for back pain.
Liz has studied yoga and meditation with world-renowned teachers of many
different styles, including BKS Iyengar and Geeta Iyengar, whom she
directly studied with in India
and the United States,
and Patricia Walden, senior Iyengar teacher and
Liz’s primary teacher since 1988. Other teachers have included Rod
Stryker, David Life and Sharon Gannon, and Erich Schiffman.
Her heart is deeply touched, inspired and opened by Zen Buddhist master/meditation
teacher Thich Nhat Hanh.
She is a certified Iyengar yoga teacher and is certified with the Yoga
Alliance as an Experienced Teacher at the E-500RYT level. Liz has been
featured on ABC.com News, Boston's
WZLX 100.7 FM Common Ground show,
the Fox Television Network, and on CBS television’s Sunday with Liz Walker. She was a presenter
at the Yoga Journal Boston Conference 2006 and received “Best Yoga
Studio” from the WBZ-TV A-list of Best Businesses in Boston 2007.
"...a teacher with deep knowledge, clear
commitment, and passion. Liz possesses an extraordinary ability to make
everyone feel that their needs are taken most seriously, even in a large
class. Her down-to-earth nature makes yoga accessible to practitioners of
all levels, and her sense of humor never fails to bring a big smile to this
practitioner, who started yoga with Liz back in 1997!"
