Morning Walking Meditation
6:45 – 7:30 AM
Join in an experiential journey
moving from the external world towards your internal Self.
We will first sit quietly,
preparing the mind for introspection. Then we will walk in silent
meditation to the outdoor reflecting pool at the nearby Christian Science
Plaza. The expansive and still reflection of the water is the catalyst for
glimpsing your true nature, known in yoga as the atmarupa – the mirrored image of yourself as the form of
pure, essential, divine energy.
Please be on time and dress
appropriately for walking outdoors. In case of severe inclement weather,
an indoor venue will be chosen.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
Yoga for Back
Care
Yoga movement
can be one of the very best ways to help an aching back heal. Students learn
therapeutic yoga postures (asanas) that focus on chronic back pain and back
injuries. These special classes focus on strengthening the back and core
muscles, gentle stretches to free the spine, and deep relaxation to
encourage spinal musculature to release and relax. Students can find relief
from pain and develop confidence and self-empowerment for creating their own
healing practices. Each student receives a manual with diagrams and
descriptions of each posture. During the workshop, students develop their
own sequence of poses for self-healing with the class work and manual as
guides.
Liz has been presenting Yoga for Back Care workshops since 2003. Her
methodology is drawn from the therapeutic work of B.K.S. Iyengar, her
understanding of anatomy and kinesiology, and principles of physical therapy
and therapeutic massage. These workshops are well-received by back pain sufferers,
and participants appreciate Liz's caring teaching style.
"Having suffered over a year
with chronic back pain and having gone through two series of physical
therapy sessions with not much improvement, I was desperate for some relief.
I attended Liz's Yoga for Back Care workshop and was immediately impressed
with what I learned and how I felt. I have been able to slowly gain
confidence in what my body CAN do through the guidance, attention and
expertise of the instructor."
- R. Siff, Teacher, Lexington, MA
Opening to the
light: Beginning asana and pranayama
Fundamentals of physical alignment drawn from the Iyengar yoga method are
explored in yoga asanas along with body awareness techniques, pranayama, and
instructions for bringing meditative movement into each pose. This powerful
combination will create an experience that brings body, mind and soul
together into the body of light, where, according to the Bhagavad Gita, the
seat of inner wisdom shines more brightly than a thousand suns.
Finding the jewels
of life: A backbend workshop
Exploring the
many facets of backbends brings us into a place of deep understanding and
skill in asana practice. This workshop will first explore the fundamentals
of backbends with emphasis on hip openings and shoulder/upper back strength
and flexibility. Then we will combine the physical actions of backbends with
right effort and skill to bring a sense of ease and joy into the poses, when
the facets of the self form a beautiful, shining jewel within the heart. No back injuries, please.
Lighting the
fire within
One of yoga's
greatest gifts is that it brings us into connection with our body's inner
fire, called agni in sanskrit. Find the source of your own fire in this
workshop designed to open the body's gates through specific pranayama,
asana, and meditation practices. Allow agni to flow, heat, invigorate, and
cleanse your being. All levels.
Get a new
viewpoint on life! Inversions for beginners
Let your body dance through the doorway of new experience into the
mind-opening vastness of being upside down! This workshop will explore
foundations for inversions and then will move into handstand, elbow balance,
headstand, and shoulderstand. Find out for yourself where space and freedom
for the physical and emotional bodies exist. Six months experience required.
Fire practice
workshop
Deepen your
practice and ignite your inner fire in this rigorous workshop combining
Iyengar and Vinyasa moves and grooves. Balances, backbends and inversion
sequences are explored as means of finding inner heat, inner strength, and
inner peace. Be ready to work! Recommended for students with at least one
year experience. Not recommended for shoulder or back injuries.
Moving into the
source: Intermediate asana and pranayama
Subtle alignments of the inner and outer bodies are explored in foundational
asanas, along with intermediate asanas that move more deeply through the
layers of the body. Advanced pranayama techniques are introduced. These
powerful practices will draw your attention into a state of deep connection
with your inner self. One year of yoga practice required.
Autumn inward
moving
Autumn is a time of allowing ourselves to shed what we no longer need, our
outer layers falling away and becoming part of the wind. In this letting go,
we create space for the magnificent beauty of new growth that comes from the
inside. This workshop explores asana and breath as the guides for reaching
deep inside, releasing what we no longer need, and witnessing the seeds of
light and spirit within.
Teacher Training
Workshops
Helping hands: Assisting others in
asana
A teacher's
intent is to develop a relationship of trust and respect with students so
that there is a mutual learning, understanding and a "meeting of
souls". Thus,
in assisting others students need to feel comfortable with our assists
physically, mentally, and emotionally. This workshop includes discussion of
yoga philosophy as it applies to assisting, demonstration of assisting
principles, and student practice and presentations.
The art of
teaching asana
Learning to
teach can be daunting, humbling, and exciting. When we approach teaching
with the same sacredness that we approach our practice, we develop
equanimity, receptivity, and an open mind. Our interaction with students becomes
an insightful and joyful experience for the student as well as the teacher. Topics covered include the
language of teaching, how to observe and correct bodies, and building
communication with students. Discover the joys, the perils, and the pitfalls
of teaching yoga!
The importance
of asana sequencing
Do you always leave your yoga class feeling exhilarated? Or have you
sometimes felt exhausted and depleted after a class? The difference may be
in how the poses of each class were linked together to form the whole. This
workshop explores how to sequence poses to supportively open the outer body
while building core energy. Then the body becomes the energy of the asana
and the student is at one with each pose, leading to a well-rounded,
holistic class experience. Students will work in teams to produce sequences
for exploration by the group.
